The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance on Wednesday filed nomination papers for five co-opted corporator positions in the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), consolidating its numerical strength in the civic body.
The nominations were submitted to Municipal Secretary and Returning Officer Nanasaheb Kamthe.
The alliance has put forward Youth Leader Paresh Thakur, BJP district vice-president Ganesh Kadu, Dr Arunkumar Bhagat, Dinesh Khanavkar, and Shiv Sena’s Advocate Prathamesh Soman as its nominees. Party representatives stated that the candidates have experience in public life and local governance.
Several senior leaders and elected representatives were present during the filing of nominations, including BJP District President Avinash Koli, Mayor Nitin Patil, Deputy Mayor Pramila Patil, former Leader of the Opposition Pritam Mhatre, along with other local leaders.
The development follows the recent PMC elections, in which the Mahayuti alliance secured a clear majority in the municipal corporation. The BJP won 55 seats, while its alliance partners Shiv Sena and NCP secured two seats each, giving the ruling coalition a combined strength of 59 members in the house.
With this majority, the alliance is entitled to nominate five of the seven co-opted corporators permitted under municipal provisions. Once approved, the addition of these members will raise the Mahayuti’s strength in the PMC to 64 corporators.
The co-opted corporator mechanism allows municipal bodies to induct individuals with experience in public affairs, administration or social work into the civic house.
