Fear has gripped Kharghar’s tribal hamlets following a reported leopard sighting near Chafewadi on the Kharghar Hill. Adivasi villagers promptly notified the Forest Department after spotting the big cat, prompting urgent demands for its trapping and relocation.
The recent report has heightened panic across Chafewadi and Phanaswadi padas, especially given a similar, unconfirmed sighting four months prior. Locals claim the leopard was seen on Tuesday evening, yet again near the settlement.
Patrolling intensified; Evidence unconfirmed
Responding to the persistent complaints, Forest Officials have moved swiftly to step up inspections.
“Forest staff will carry out a detailed inspection in the pada, and appropriate measures have been initiated,” stated Gajanan Panpatte, Range Forest Officer, Panvel Forest Division. “The cameras have been reinstalled and the patrolling too has been increased ever since the villagers reported the sighting. We have not found any physical evidence of the presence yet.”
The RFO further clarified that a video circulating on social media, purportedly showing the Kharghar leopard, is false, urging residents to rely only on official reports. Patrolling will remain high-alert while officials actively search for definitive signs of the animal’s presence.
