A three-day training programme related to Census 2027 has been conducted at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters as part of preparatory work for the upcoming national census.
According to officials, India’s next population census is scheduled to be completed with a reference date of March 1, 2027. The exercise will be conducted in a digital format, marking the first such instance in the country.
Census to be conducted in two phases
The census process will be carried out in two stages. The first phase, covering house listing and housing census, is scheduled between May 16 and June 14, 2026. The second phase is expected to be conducted in February–March 2027.
A self-enumeration option will also be made available from May 1 to May 15, 2026, allowing citizens to submit household information through a secure online portal.
Training conducted for field-level implementation
The training programme was conducted between April 6 and April 11 at the NMMC headquarters. It was led by master trainers, including Tejal Katare, Assistant Director (Census), Directorate of Census Operations, Maharashtra, and Swapnil Desai, Deputy Engineer appointed by NMMC.
A total of 45 field trainers from eight ward offices participated in the sessions, which included practical demonstrations.
Further training to be conducted at field level
These trained personnel will now conduct sessions for approximately 500 supervisors and 3,100 enumerators across the NMMC area between April 26 and May 8, 2026.
Following this, enumerators and supervisors will carry out door-to-door data collection in their assigned areas during the first phase of the census.
Officials address participants during training
Senior officials, including Additional Commissioner Dr Rahul Gethe, Deputy Commissioner Somnath Potre (Zone 1), Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner (Property Tax) Dr Amol Palve, and City Census Officer Sanjay Shinde, addressed the participants and guided them during the training sessions.
