Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil visited a textile recycling facility in CBD Belapur, where a project aimed at reducing fabric waste and promoting reuse is currently being implemented.
The facility, developed under the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), focuses on processing discarded clothing and converting it into reusable and upcycled products.
Project focuses on waste reduction and reuse
Officials associated with the project said the initiative seeks to address the growing volume of textile waste by collecting used garments and subjecting them to sorting, processing and repurposing.
Clothing collected from residential areas and designated collection points is brought to the facility, where it is categorised based on condition. Reusable materials are either repurposed or redesigned into new products, while non-recyclable waste is minimised.
Employment opportunities for women highlighted
During the visit, the Mayor interacted with women working at the facility, many of whom are part of self-help groups. According to project officials, the initiative has created livelihood opportunities by offering skill-based work linked to recycling and product development.
The project is being implemented with support from multiple agencies, including the Textile Committee under the Ministry of Textiles, along with institutional partners.
Civic body emphasises public participation
Civic officials noted that the success of the initiative depends on public participation, particularly in segregating and contributing used clothing for recycling. Collection systems have been put in place through designated vehicles and multiple drop-off points across the city.
Part of broader sustainability efforts
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to improve solid waste management and promote environmentally sustainable practices in the city. Officials indicated that reducing textile waste reaching dumping grounds remains a key objective of the project.
