The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) observed World Water Day across all its divisional offices, with officials and staff of the water supply department coming together to take a collective ‘Jal Rakshak’ (water protector) pledge.
The observance was held under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner, Dr Kailas Shinde, and coordinated through the office of Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde. Programmes were organised at major water reservoirs across all eight administrative divisions, where engineers, officers and staff participated in the initiative.
Focus on conservation and responsible use
Observed globally since 1993 under the aegis of the United Nations Water, World Water Day aims to highlight the importance of protecting freshwater resources and promoting sustainable water management.
Marking the occasion, NMMC officials took a pledge emphasising:
- Judicious use of water
- Avoidance of wastage
- Conservation of available water resources
Participants also committed to supporting the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, focusing on rainwater conservation and storage at the local level.
This year’s theme: Water and Gender
The theme for World Water Day 2026 — “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows” — highlights the link between access to water and social equity, particularly the role of water access in improving quality of life.
NMMC’s appeal to citizens
While Navi Mumbai is considered a water-secure city due to the Morbe Dam, civic officials emphasised that responsible consumption remains essential.
The civic body appealed to residents to:
- Use water as per actual need
- Avoid wastage in daily activities
- Encourage family members and neighbours to adopt water-saving practices
A collective responsibility
The pledge taken by officials also underscored the importance of treating water as a valuable and limited resource, and promoting awareness within communities.
The NMMC noted that sustainable water use is a shared responsibility, extending beyond institutions to every household in the city.
