Navi Mumbai hosted its first international boxing event, the IBA Global Boxing Series, at Nexus Seawoods Mall in Nerul Sector 40, marking a notable addition to the city’s sporting landscape.
The event, held on April 26, was organised by Marine Boxing Academy in partnership with the International Boxing Association (IBA), with support from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
Mary Kom attends as guest of honour
Olympic medallist and six-time world champion Mary Kom attended the event as the guest of honour. Addressing the participating athletes, she emphasised that success in boxing, as in any field, requires consistent hard work and discipline.
She highlighted the importance of continuous practice, a willingness to learn, determination and perseverance, adding that athletes should neither become complacent after success nor discouraged by failure, but continue striving consistently.
International bouts and key highlights
The event featured bouts between Indian and international boxers across men’s and women’s categories. The main event saw Callum Dan of the United Kingdom face India’s Suresh Pasham. The programme also included the debut of Muay Thai fighter Ashish Sethi, along with several competitive bouts showcasing emerging and established talent.
Civic presence and support
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil was present at the event. Also in attendance were NMMC Sports, Cultural and Youth Welfare Committee Chairman Girish Mhatre, Deputy Commissioner (Sports and Cultural Affairs) Abhilasha Patil, Sports Officer Revappa Gurav, sportsperson Hitesh Chaudhary, and Marine Boxing Academy head Devaraj Das.
Speaking on the occasion, the mayor noted that the civic body has been working to provide platforms for various sports and encourage participation among youth. She added that the presence of an international athlete such as Mary Kom added significance to the event and contributed to its profile.

The event drew a large number of spectators, particularly young athletes and sports enthusiasts, reflecting growing interest in boxing and competitive sports in the city.
