The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched extensive door-to-door awareness campaigns across the city to ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management (SMW). The active participation of Navi Mumbai residents has been sought to strengthen waste segregation practices in the city.
As part of the campaign, municipal teams are conducting awareness visits and distributing informational pamphlets among residents to educate citizens about the importance of segregating household waste at source before disposal.
According to the civic body, the initiative aims to improve recycling efficiency, support scientific waste processing systems and promote long-term environmental sustainability across Navi Mumbai.
Residents are being informed about the mandatory segregation of waste into four categories under the SWM Rules 2026.
Citizens are being guided to segregate waste as follows:
Green Bin – Wet Waste
Includes food leftovers, vegetable and fruit peels, tea waste and garden waste. Such biodegradable waste can be composted and converted into manure.
Blue Bin – Dry Waste
Includes recyclable material such as paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass items. Proper segregation of dry waste helps strengthen recycling systems and reduces landfill burden.
Red Bin – Sanitary Waste
Includes sanitary pads, diapers, bandages and similar sanitary waste, which should be securely wrapped before disposal to ensure safer handling and prevent contamination.
Black Bin – Special Care Waste
Includes batteries, expired medicines, bulbs, paint containers, electronic waste and other household hazardous or special-care waste requiring careful disposal.
Municipal officials stated that segregation at source remains one of the most important aspects of modern waste management systems and significantly contributes towards maintaining urban cleanliness standards.
The civic body has appealed to residents to dispose waste responsibly and cooperate with sanitation workers and authorised waste collection teams in ensuring effective implementation of the updated waste management rules.
The awareness drive forms part of NMMC’s larger efforts linked to Swachh Bharat initiatives, Swachh Survekshan participation and the city’s broader sustainability and environmental management goals.
Officials stated that behavioural awareness and active citizen participation remain essential for Navi Mumbai’s continued efforts towards maintaining its reputation as one of the country’s leading clean cities.
