Uran/Panvel: Concerns regarding the environmental condition of Dronagiri Hill in Uran, a site of historical and ecological importance in Raigad district, were raised in the State Assembly, with a call for immediate and structured conservation measures.
Local MLA Mahesh Baldi highlighted the issue through a legislative notice, urging the government to take concrete steps to safeguard the hill from ongoing environmental pressures.
Concerns over environmental degradation
During the discussion, it was pointed out that Dronagiri Hill, which holds historical and cultural significance, has been witnessing environmental stress in recent years.
Key concerns raised included:
- Tree felling
- Soil erosion
- Alleged illegal excavation activities
It was noted that such factors could affect the ecological balance of the hill region if not addressed in a timely manner.
Suggestions for protection
The proposal included:
- Considering restrictions on development in hilly areas above a certain elevation, in line with broader judicial guidelines
- Exploring the possibility of identifying the Dronagiri Hill region as a protected forest zone
- Strengthening monitoring to curb unauthorised activities such as tree cutting and excavation
Government response
Responding to the concerns, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik stated that the government is mindful of the need to balance conservation with regulated development in areas of historical and environmental importance.
He noted that:
- Dronagiri Hill in Uran (Raigad district) holds historical and religious significance
- Development activities in such areas are subject to established rules and scrutiny
- Guidelines issued by the central government and the Supreme Court are taken into consideration before permitting any development in elevated or sensitive regions
