With HPV vaccination drives now underway across multiple nodes of Navi Mumbai, including areas governed by the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC , preventive healthcare has begun reaching communities at the local level.
While NMMC is administering the vaccine across its jurisdiction in Thane district, PMC has rolled out the drive across nodes such as between Panvel and Kharghar, in the Raigad district, using its network of 15 urban primary health centres.

What is HPV and why it matters
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers among women in India.
Medical evidence shows that certain high-risk strains of HPV are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases. Vaccination helps prevent these infections before exposure, making it one of the most effective forms of cancer prevention.
From National push to local implementation
India has recently expanded its focus on HPV vaccination as part of its broader public health strategy, with states like Maharashtra initiating large-scale immunisation drives targeting adolescent girls.
At the local level, this is now being implemented through civic bodies and both the municipal corporations of Navi Mumbai are actively campaigning it within their respective jurusdictions.
The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is conducting a three-month long drive across 15 urban primary health centres in the region.
Similarly, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is facilitating vaccination through five NMMC hospitals and 26 urban health centres in their region.
Both PMC and NMMC are ensuring that the drive reaches out to the maximum prosects through active online and offline campaigning.
Why the focus on 14-year-old girls
The vaccination drives are specifically targeting girls who have Completed 14 years but are below 15 years of age
This follows established medical guidance that the vaccine is most effective before exposure to HPV
Early administration ensures long-term protection
Why this matters for local families
For families across Kharghar, Kamothe, Panvel and other Navi Mumbai nodes, this is a significant public health opportunity for several reasons:
- The vaccine is being made available through government health centres
- It is part of a preventive approach rather than reactive treatment
- It reduces long-term health risks associated with cervical cancer
- With cervical cancer often developing silently over time, early intervention becomes critical.
The larger significance
India continues to account for a notable share of global cervical cancer cases, making prevention a priority.
At the ground level, the role of civic bodies such as PMC and NMMC is crucial. By implementing vaccination drives within their respective jurisdictions, they are ensuring that national health initiatives translate into accessible local action.
This reflects a gradual shift towards preventive healthcare becoming a more visible part of everyday civic health services, particularly for adolescents.
