Residents of Kharghar and Kamothe will face complete water shutdowns every Friday from May 25 after the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) announced precautionary water restrictions linked to declining levels at Morbe Dam.
The revised water management plan forms part of a city-wide evening water shutdown and 10 per cent supply cut announced across Navi Mumbai from May 25, as a precautionary measure citing dipping reservoir levels and weather predictions about possible low rainfall conditions influenced by El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) patterns.
The announcement has once again highlighted concerns surrounding Kharghar’s long-term infrastructure sustainability as the node continues witnessing rapid residential growth alongside multiple upcoming commercial and infrastructure developments.
According to civic officials, the restrictions have been introduced as a preventive measure amid concerns over a potentially weaker monsoon season this year, along with rising evaporation losses due to high summer temperatures.
Kharghar and Kamothe — both dependent on Morbe Dam supply — have repeatedly faced water-related concerns during peak summer periods in recent years, especially amid rapid population growth and expanding construction activity across the region.
The latest announcement has also revived conversations around the future burden on Kharghar’s civic infrastructure, particularly at a time when several large-scale projects are being proposed or planned around the node.
NMMC officials, however, clarified that adequate water stock is presently available and appealed to residents to avoid panic while using water carefully during the restriction period.
