Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde conducted a three-hour early morning inspection tour across parts of Belapur and Nerul on bicycle along with senior civic officials from the NMMC, on Monday.
The inspection, carried out between 6 am and 9 am, was undertaken in line with the appeal made by the Prime Minister in the backdrop of the ongoing West Asian crisis and the related guidelines issued by the Maharashtra government encouraging responsible resource usage and public awareness initiatives.
Senior civic officials accompanying the commissioner during the cycle inspection included City Engineer Shirish Ardawad, Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadde, Deputy Commissioner of Zone 1 Somnath Potre and Belapur Assistant Commissioner Prashant Nerkar.
The inspection route began from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Nerul Sector 1 and covered areas including Shirvane, Sarsole, Kukshet, Karave, Jewel of Navi Mumbai, the Seawoods railway flyover, Parsik Hill, Income Tax Colony and the water pumping station at Agroli.
During the visit, Dr Shinde reviewed various civic facilities including cleanliness conditions, public toilets, gardens, markets, cycle tracks and pump house infrastructure. Officials stopped at several locations during the tour, where the commissioner issued on-ground instructions related to maintenance and improvements.
Particular attention was given to cleanliness conditions in village areas such as Shirvane, Sarsole, Kukshet and Karave, with officials instructed to strengthen sanitation efforts in both gaothan and adjoining sector areas.
The commissioner also directed officials to improve Chincholi Garden at Shirvane-Juinagar and stressed the need to maintain public toilets in good condition across the city. At one location near Palm Beach Road, officials were instructed to examine the possibility of repositioning a public toilet structure situated near the Vazirani Sports corner.
At Sarsole, Dr Shinde instructed civic staff to improve cleanliness around the Arogyavardhini Centre and expedite pending market-related works in the area. He also suggested developing a market facility near the Karave village corner based on public requirements.
During the inspection, officials observed instances of garbage dumping on vacant plots in certain areas. The commissioner instructed departments concerned to take preventive measures and ensure regular cleaning of such plots.
At Agroli Sector 28, Dr Shinde conducted a detailed review of the pump house infrastructure and SCADA water management system located near the foothills of Parsik Hill and suggested certain operational improvements.
The cycle inspection also conveyed an indirect message promoting cycling as both an environmentally conscious and health-oriented practice, while enabling civic authorities to obtain a direct ground-level assessment of urban services and infrastructure across the city.
