What began as a steady response in the opening days of Navi Mumabi Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) Abhay Yojana has now gathered pace, with collections crossing ₹81 crore as the scheme enters its final stretch.
In the first nine days after its launch on March 10, the NMMC had recovered ₹20.15 crore from 5,744 property tax defaulters. That figure has since risen sharply. As per the latest update, 15,092 defaulters have cleared their dues, contributing a total of ₹81.34 crore so far.
With just four days remaining before the March 31 deadline, the municipal corporation has stepped up its push, both in terms of outreach and on-ground facilitation.
Overall property tax collection for the financial year 2025–26 now stands at ₹755 crore as of March 27 (5 pm), with 2,14,900 property owners having paid their dues. A clear majority — 61.5 per cent — have opted for online payments, while 38.5 per cent have paid through collection centres.
To accommodate last-minute payments, tax collection centres will remain open through the weekend — from 10 am to 7 pm on March 28, 29 and 30 — and will operate till midnight on March 31.
The Abhay Yojana offers a 50 per cent waiver on late payment penalties, provided the full outstanding amount for the financial year 2025–26 is cleared in a single instalment. The scheme covers residential, non-residential, industrial properties as well as vacant plots.
Civic officials said a mix of digital systems, reminders and direct follow-ups has helped maintain momentum as the deadline approaches — something that tends to define the closing days of most year-end drives.
Earlier, the NMMC had initiated action against property tax defaulters, warning them of property attachment and auction. In a way, the stern warning could also have led to the huge response by house owners.
For the defaulters who still remain so after the financial year closes 31 March, a strict recovery process may be initiated by the NMMC.
