The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken action against 34 construction projects for violations of air and noise pollution norms, directing immediate suspension of work at the identified sites.
The action follows inspections carried out in compliance with directions of the Bombay High Court and instructions issued by Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale.
Inspections and enforcement action
According to the civic body, a total of 169 construction sites had earlier been issued notices directing them to implement necessary pollution control measures or halt work. However, several developers failed to comply with the directives.
Subsequently, PMC teams conducted fresh site inspections to verify adherence to environmental norms. Based on these inspections, 34 sites were found to be in violation and were ordered to stop work immediately.
Area-wise action
The action was carried out across multiple divisions:
- Kalamboli: 10 projects
- Kamothe: 9 projects
- Panvel and New Panvel: 15 projects
Key violations observed
Inspections revealed several lapses, including failure to implement dust control measures, improper storage of construction material, and non-compliance with standard operating procedures during construction activities.
Authorities also noted the absence of measures such as water sprinkling to control dust, inadequate covering of construction materials and vehicles, and lack of basic monitoring systems.
Compliance requirements
The civic body has directed developers to take immediate corrective steps. These include installing adequate barricading around construction sites, ensuring dust suppression through sprinklers or similar systems, proper covering of materials and transport vehicles, and adherence to prescribed environmental safeguards.
Warning of further action
PMC has warned that continued violations will invite legal action. Officials stated that inspections and enforcement drives will continue in the coming period to ensure compliance.

The civic administration said the action is aimed at safeguarding public health, ensuring cleaner air, and maintaining environmental standards within municipal limits.
